Basketball & Volleyball Lighting - Gymnasium

Best Lights completed a project that involved the direct overhead lighting of two basketball and three volleyball courts at the Wayman Palmer YMCA in Toledo, OH.

The problem they were having was two fold. For one the lighting was hard on the players. Looking upward brought the bright glare of the lights directly into the players’ eyes and impaired their vision. The 98’ x 126’ facility’s 20-foot metal roof also made it expensive to heat the building in the winter. Noise was a problem as the sound reflected off the metal ceiling making normal conversation difficult.

Best Lights and it’s sister company, Commercial Building & Retrofit, provided a solution for both problems. First, the existing 56-400 watt direct light fixtures were removed and a new reflective ROD Suspension Fiberglass Insulation System™ was installed. The new ceiling gave the facility a bright
look plus cut heating cost by 35% and noise by 50%. With the new ceiling in place, 20-1000 watt indirect Best Lights Sports Fixtures (MH-ISP) featuring a patented reflector design that provides up to 35% more light than any other indirect fixture were installed.

The new insulated ceiling and lighting system scored big with the players and the YMCA management. Though fewer fixtures were used, the overall light level increased 39% - from 40 to 65 foot-candles but without the disturbing glare. Management was happy with the cost savings achieved by installing 36 fewer fixtures and the 11% reduction in electricity usage plus the 35% reduction in energy consumption for
heating.

Results:
- 11% reduction in electricity consumption; 20-1000 watt Best Lights Indirect Sport fixtures versus 56 – 400 watt direct light fixtures.
- 39% increase in light levels; from 40 to 65 footcandles Glare-Free.
- Installation cost savings $4,000.00 (20-MH-ISP fixtures versus 56 direct light fixtures).
- 50% reduction in noise levels.
- 35% reduction in energy consumption for heating.
